Collegiality

As a member of the Arts and Humanities team at Chesapeake College, I consider myself quite fortunate to work, collaborate, and learn at an institution that encourages collegiality and collaboration. These values were illustrated and employed as a member of the leadership team for the college’s reaccreditation process. As the editor of the Middle States Report, it was a joy to see all stakeholders on campus come together to take part in this endeavor and for me, to work closely with the lead writer on crafting a comprehensive analysis that reflected the hard work and dedication demonstrated every day by our faculty, staff, and administrators to ensuring student success and academic excellence. Additionally, I have been happy to engage in practices that also demonstrate my collegiality, including, but not limited to:

  • Agreed to serve as an upcoming co-mentor for The Beacon
  • Working off contract as needed this summer to help finish the update for the curriculum guide for APC
  • Offered to teach a Composition class at the high school in Fall 2024

As I am wrapping up my study to earn my second master’s level degree (Writing and Linguistics) I have chosen to share my scholarship with my peers in the past. Now that Middle States is in the rearview mirror, I recently returned to that practice by sharing some updates to my curriculum for ENG 101 and ENG 102 with my colleagues.

I have always respected how important Professional Development is in any career because it is so important to the continuum of skill building and preparing each of us to take on more responsibility and leadership roles. As we collectively work together to gain more knowledge, we are actively making the college stronger, thereby benefitting our student population. Therefore, I continue to look forward to the faculty sponsored workshops that are offered and am impressed by the takeaways that I am granted through participation. This was especially true this past year with the presentations/workshops on DEI and AI.

Due to my interest in curriculum, I continue to serve on a cross-divisional team, the Academic Program Committee. In addition to serving as Liaison to the Academic Council for two years, I served the last two years as co-chair of APC and am grateful for the opportunity and the willingness of all members to work together to help the college fulfill its mission and Strategic Plan.
